Physical Education
At Daresbury Primary School, we want every child to SHINE as a confident and active learner. Our Physical Education curriculum supports children to develop the physical skills, knowledge, confidence and positive attitudes they need to enjoy being active and lead healthy, active lives.
We want children to experience the enjoyment of physical activity while developing movement, coordination, teamwork, resilience and confidence. Through PE, children learn that success is not simply about winning, but about participating, improving, challenging themselves, working with others and showing determination.
We use the Get Set 4 PE curriculum to support the delivery of a progressive and engaging PE curriculum. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children progressively develop their physical skills, knowledge, understanding and vocabulary as they move through school. Children revisit and build upon important skills, enabling them to apply their learning with increasing control, confidence and independence.
Physical Skills and Knowledge
In accordance with the National Curriculum, children develop their competence across a broad range of physical activities and are encouraged to be physically active for sustained periods of time.
Throughout their time at Daresbury, children experience a broad range of activities and are given regular opportunities to:
-
develop fundamental movement skills, including running, jumping, throwing and catching;
-
develop balance, agility, coordination and control;
-
participate in individual and team activities;
-
develop skills and tactics within a range of games;
-
perform and develop sequences of movement through gymnastics and dance;
-
develop their athletic skills and challenge their personal performance;
-
communicate, cooperate and work effectively as part of a team;
-
apply rules, strategies and tactics appropriately;
-
evaluate their own performance and identify ways to improve;
-
develop resilience, perseverance and positive attitudes towards physical activity.
As children progress through school, they are encouraged to apply their skills with increasing accuracy, control and confidence, make decisions during physical activity and understand how different strategies and tactics can influence performance.
We recognise that PE provides important opportunities for children to challenge themselves, experience success and learn from setbacks. Children are encouraged to persevere, practise and recognise their own progress and achievements.
Healthy and Active Lives
PE makes an important contribution to children's understanding of health, fitness and wellbeing. Children learn about the effects of physical activity on their bodies and develop an understanding of why regular exercise is important for both physical and mental health.
We want children to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and recognise that being active can take many different forms. Through experiencing a broad range of activities, we aim to help every child discover ways of being active that they enjoy and can continue beyond their time at primary school.
PE and SHINE
Physical Education makes an important contribution to our Daresbury SHINE framework: Safe, Healthy, Independent, Nurturing and Exploring.
Safe – Children learn to participate safely, use equipment responsibly, follow rules and understand how to keep themselves and others safe during physical activity.
Healthy – Children understand the importance of regular physical activity and develop positive habits that support their physical health, mental wellbeing and overall fitness.
Independent – Children develop confidence in their own physical abilities, challenge themselves, make decisions and take increasing responsibility for improving their performance.
Nurturing – Children learn to work as part of a team, encourage and support others, demonstrate respect and fairness and celebrate the achievements of everyone.
Exploring – Children experience a wide range of sports and physical activities, try new skills, solve problems and discover different ways to enjoy being active.
PE Beyond the Classroom
We want children to understand that being physically active extends beyond their PE lessons. Throughout the year, we provide a range of opportunities for children to participate, compete, lead and enjoy sport and physical activity.
Every class benefits from working with a sports coach once a week, providing children with regular opportunities to further develop their skills and experience a wide range of physical activities.
Competition is an important part of our wider sporting provision. Throughout the year, children have opportunities to take part in inter-house competitions, enabling them to represent their house, work as a team and apply the skills they have developed in a supportive and enjoyable competitive environment.
We also participate in a range of local and virtual sporting competitions, giving children opportunities to represent Daresbury, compete alongside and against children from other schools and experience different sports and challenges.
Leadership Through Sport
We believe PE and sport provide valuable opportunities for children to develop leadership, responsibility and confidence.
In Year 6, children have opportunities to become Play Leaders, taking responsibility for organising and leading physical activities and challenges for other year groups throughout the year. This enables our oldest pupils to develop their communication and leadership skills while acting as positive role models and encouraging other children to be active.
These opportunities help to create a culture in which children do not simply participate in physical activity but also encourage, support and inspire others to get involved.
Our aim is for children to leave Daresbury as confident, resilient and enthusiastic participants in physical activity who understand the importance of leading a healthy and active life. We want them to have developed the physical skills, teamwork and positive attitudes needed to participate successfully in sport and physical activity, while having the confidence and motivation to remain active as they grow.
